How well do you know the BYU football team?
Sure, you know the statistics, and the heights and weights, and the schedule. But how well do you REALLY know the Cougars?
Because providing information is what we do, we give you the third annual installment of "Spring Questions." Here's how it works: We ask an offensive player a series of questions about his teammates, then we ask a defensive player the same questions.
This year's offensive player is senior wide receiver Michael Reed, who was more than happy to open up about his teammates. If only he'd stop calling me, "sir." ... Then we asked senior linebacker David Nixon the same questions.
Today, we'll give Reed's answers. Tomorrow, you'll read what Nixon had to say.
• Disclaimer: These questions are guaranteed to have no bearing whatsoever on the outcome of the 2008 season and will not invoke Bronco Mendenhall's wrath for giving away private team information ... unless finding out which player is the worst dancer on the team crosses that line.
So, Michael ...
Q: Who are the offensive team leaders?
A: "The whole offense. But if I have to pick people, I'll say Max Hall (Jr. QB), myself, Harvey Unga (So. RB), Fui Vakapuna (Sr. RB), Dennis Pitta (Jr. TE), Austin Collie (Jr. WR), the whole line, we've got a bunch of leaders. We've got 11 leaders."
Q: Who are the defensive team leaders?
A: "I would say David Nixon (Sr. LB), David Tafuna (Sr. S), Jan Jorgensen (Jr. DE), the experienced guys."
Q: Who's the biggest hitter?
A: "David Tafuna, yes, sir."
Q: Who's the fastest?
A: "Bryce Mahuika (Sr. WR)."
Q: Who's the craziest? (The Justin Luettgerodt Memorial Award)
A: "I'd say Brannon Brooks (Fr. DB). He just believed anything anybody tells him. He's one of those kids that it seems like no one has ever told him a lie."
Q: Who's the most talented (in something other than football)?
A: "Myself. Basketball, baseball, ping pong, chess ... anything other than soccer."
Q: Who's the smartest?
A: "David Oswald (Sr. OL). Last time I heard, he had a 3.96."
Q: Who's the smoothest with the ladies?
A: "That would have to be Terrance Hooks (Jr. LB)."
Q: Who THINKS he's the smoothest with the ladies?
A: "Brandon Howard (Jr. DB)."
Q: Who needs to get married?
A: "David Nixon. He just needs to settle down. Every time I'm out, I see him with a different lady and he always says they're just friends."
Q: Who's the most likely to be a head coach someday?
A: "Bryce Mahuika. He's into that coaching stuff."
Q: Who's the best looking? (The Matt Berry Memorial Award?)
A: "Besides myself? (long pause) ... Myself."
Q: If a fight breaks out on the field, who would you want to have your back?
A: "Terrance Hooks, for sure."
Q: Who talks the most trash?
A: "Brandon Bradley (So. DB). He runs that mouth 24-7." (Editors note: For the third year in a row, an offensive player picked a defensive back in this category. What a shocker, huh?)
Q: Who's the quietest? (The Bryant "Silencer" Atkinson Memorial Award)
A: "Andrew George (Jr. TE). He tends to get lost in the offense out there, but he's a great asset to the team."
Q: Who's the biggest computer geek?
A: "It's a three-way tie. I see Scotty Johnson (Jr. DB) studying every day, I see Grant Nelson (So. LB) studying every day and I see Matt Bauman (Jr. LB) studying every day."
Q: Who's the best dancer on the team? (The Ben Criddle Memorial Award)
A: "Brandon Howard. Now he's the man since Ben Criddle graduated."
Q: Who's the worst dancer?
A: "That would have to be Fui Vakapuna. I've seen him dance before."
Q: Who quotes the most movie lines?
A: "Terrance Hooks and Brandon Bradley will give away movies, they repeat so many lines."
Q: Who does the best coach impression?
A: "Myself and Vic So'oto (Jr. LB) both do Coach (Robert) Anae and Coach (Jay) Omer." (Reed did a few seconds of Anae and sounded just like him.)
• Practice report: BYU worked situations during team drills on Tuesday (blue zone, two-minute drill). Hall was 8-of-11 for 136 yards and a long touchdown to Collie. Mendenhall said he felt his team had accomplished everything it could during spring football, even with a practice remaining on Thursday.
• Spring Game: The 35th annual Blue-White Spring Scrimmage is Saturday at 1 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Mendenhall said it would mainly be a developmental scrimmage for the younger players. Asked if Hall would play, Mendenhall said if he did, the closest defender to him would be about 15 yards away.
Grade-school youth between the ages of five and 12 will be able to participate in a free football clinic on Saturday at noon. Members of the BYU football team will be on hand to teach basic fundamentals.
Stadium gates will open at 11 a.m. A promotional football poster will be available to the first 2,500 fans.
Concessions will open by 11:30 a.m. on the west (upper & lower level) and east sides (lower level) of the stadium.
Parking is free for the spring scrimmage.
