BYU softball blasts 10 HR's in win over UVSC PDF Print E-mail

Daniela Snow had the perfect last name for a biting cold, blustery two hours of softball.

The BYU hitter also had the perfect swing Wednesday. She bashed three home runs at Utah Valley in a 22-2 Cougar win.

"We were talking about that as a team, and maybe just one of the home runs wouldn't have gone out if it wasn't so windy," Snow said. "We hit the ball pretty hard."

Hard enough for 10 -- yes, ten -- home runs in a five-inning game.

Angeline Quiocho also had three, while Emi Snow-Wiling and Jessica Purcell each had a pair.

With a young team, and an inexperienced pitching unit, trying to fire a bright yellow ball past a bunch of skilled hitters proved to be an impossible task. The Cougars finished with 26 hits.

The wind helped make off-speed pitches difficult and "We didn't have enough 'oomph' to get past their hitters' bats," UVSC coach Todd Fairbourne said.

He downplayed the effects of the wind, pointing out that it didn't help his team hit any homers. The Wolverines (8-26) scored both runs in the second, taking advantage of a few walks and a couple hit batters.

"I don't know what happened that inning," BYU coach Gordon Eakin said playfully as he talked about starting pitcher Christie Zinanti, who was otherwise dominant in her three innings (notably four strikeouts in 16 batters faced).

It was 7-2, BYU, after its pitcher fought through her lone rough spot. Zinanti loaded the bases, but a couple of strikeouts ended the inning.

Any idea that UVSC was going to get back into the game was brushed aside by Emi Snow-Willing.

That's just the cold, hard-hit truth. She drilled a grand slam along the left-field line in the third inning, making it 12-2.

That, and most of the other long shots, Eakin said, "would've left just about any park in the country." At UV, it's 200 feet down the lines and 215 to straightaway center. Snow-Willing's shot nearly hit the baseball stadium, and there were a few cars in the parking lot beyond center field that may have warranted a few calls from owners to their insurance companies.

BYU (30-14) defeated its University Parkway rival 7-0 on April 1. UVSC is 1-14 against the Cougars.

Fairbourne talked afterward about his team being able to handle the extremes. He meant that two ways. Yes, the weather. But also the opponent. BYU is one of the best on the schedule. His team had three hits, by as many batters, and Kylee Steadman had a double.

While UVSC will play its next six games away from Orem (at Northern Colorado on Friday and Saturday, followed by a doubleheader April 26 at Idaho State), the Cougars await a Friday-Saturday showdown at home against Utah.

No doubt BYU is hoping for better weather. The first baseman Snow recalled thinking, "are you kidding me?" when she was trying to warm up before the game.

UV SChad to be thinking that during it. In a sport where it's common for runners to move base to base, the Cougars had half (13) of their hits log at least two bases.

"We want to take every opponent seriously," Eakin said. "And right now we're hitting our stride as a team."
