Cougar baseball falls to Air Force; Wolverines beat Dixie State PDF Print E-mail

USAFA, Colo. -- A grand slam by Addison Gentry in windy conditions Thursday snapped a 55-game conference losing streak for the Air Force Academy as it beat BYU, 13-9.

The Cougars (15-25 overall, 5-8 MWC) had leads of 3-0 and 6-3 after the first two innings, but had to rally to tie the game at 9-all in the ninth.

BYU is now mired in a five-game losing streak of its own. Air Force improved to 14-24, 1-11.

It looked like the Cougars might pull it out as AFA starter Alex Truesdale (2-5) began to falter in the ninth. He threw 157 pitches in the game.

BYU's Sean McNaughton hit a one-out double put Brandon Relf on third in the ninth to revive the Cougars' hope. Dan Vargas' single scored Relf and moved McNaughton to third. Kent Walton beat out an infield single to score McNaughton and tie the game, 9-9. That set up Gentry's slam in the bottom of the inning.

The two teams play Game 2 of the three-game series today at 2 p.m.

• BYU men's golf: At Tucson, Ariz., the 15th-ranked UNLV Rebels carded a 3-under-par 281 to take the first-round lead at the Mountain West Conference men's golf championship at Omni Tucson National Golf Course on Thursday.

The Rebels hold a two-shot lead over second-place TCU, which turned in a 1-under 283. Defending champion BYU is third after posting a 2-over 286, followed by Utah and Colorado State in a tie for fourth with identical scores of 4-over-par 288.

Junior Nick Killpack and freshman Adam Tebbs paced the Cougars with a pair of even-par 71s. Tebbs and Killpack are tied for seventh place individually. Two other Cougars, freshman Esteban Calisto and sophomore Robbie Fillmore, finished the day even par to round out the scoring for BYU.¬

• UVSC baseball: At Orem, Scott Croshaw went 4-for-5 with a home run and five runs batted in as Utah Valley used a nine-run eighth to pull away from Dixie State, 14-4, in the opening game of a three-game series. The senior also tripled in the game, finishing just a double shy of the cycle.

Leading 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth, the Wolverines (10-26-1) sent 14 batters to the plate and had 10 hits, with Croshaw and Kevin Arendse picking up two hits each. Marcus Moore (6-5) went eight innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits to pick up the win.

• BYU softball: At Provo, the BYU women's softball team (34-16 overall, 8-4 MWC) posted a split with No. 19 San Diego State (36-14, 8-4), winning 7-4 in the first game and falling 4-1 in Game 2 at Gail Miller Field. Amanda Vance was 2-for-2 with three RBI for the Cougars in Game 1, while Christina Trice went all seven innings, scattering five hits, walking three and striking out eight.

The Cougars face UNLV today at 7 p.m.

• BYU track: At Provo, BYU freshman Chase Dalton battled the snow and wind to win the men's decathlon at the 2008 BYU Robison Invitational.

Dalton scored 6,805 points after winning the javelin (190 feet, 10 inches) and discus (130-8) on Thursday. Dalton was in third place after Day 1, but came through with solid performances to get the win.

In the women's heptathlon, Idaho State sophomore Cassie Merkley held onto her first-day lead to win the heptathlon with 5,165 points.

The running and field events start today, with the women's javelin starting at 11 a.m. and the women's 100m hurdles at 1 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for students and children enter for free. Youth up to age 14 wearing their track competition uniform are admitted free.

• BYU men's and women's tennis: At Fort Worth, Texas, the fifth-seeded BYU men's tennis team upset No. 4 UNLV 4-2 in Fifth-seeded BYU upset No. 4 UNLV 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the MWC men's tournament.

The Cougars won the doubles point, getting victories from Daniel Hwang-Thomas Shubert (8-3) at No. 2 and from Cassidy Mears-Evan Urbina (8-4) at No. 3. BYU got singles wins from Shubert (6-1, 7-6), Hwang (6-1, 6-1) and A.J. Young (6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 ). BYU faces top seed TCU today in the semifinals.

Things didn't go so well for the Cougar women. BYU dropped a 4-0 decision to Utah in the first round of the MWC women's tournament. The Cougars lost the doubles point, then dropped singles matchess at No. 1 , No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
