Mariama Salifu won two races easily Friday, but a coach from another team couldn't resist offering some advice on how to approach the finish line.

Salifu has no problem standing out. She is, after all, about to become an Olympian.

The 25-year-old qualified as part of the 400-meter relay team for her native Ghana last summer.

"It's been good for us to have her be part of our program, help us build things," UVSC coach Scott Houle said. "We're hopeful that she has a good experience in Beijing (China) in August."

While fighting a cold, Salifu still captured first place in the 100- and 200-meter heats, making her the favorite in today's final races at BYU's Robison Invitational.

This is one of Salifu's favorite meets, as she broke UVSC records on the Cougar track last year.

"I'm not really performing the way I want to right now," she said, because of the illness. "But I just need to get a good start (in the finals) and hold my position."

The 100 final is at 2:40 p.m., with the 200 an hour later. The 400 relay is the first track championship event, scheduled for 1 p.m.

It's where she's becoming famous back home, too, as the first leg. Her group captured gold at the All-African games last July, then placed 12th at the world championships in September.

Salifu gets to wear green no matter where she races. At UVSC, it's the main school color. In Ghana, the national flag is horizontal red, green and gold stripes accompanied by a black star in the middle.

"I'm proud of wearing the Wolverine green, and I'm proud of wearing the (Ghana) colors, too," Salifu said. "I'm happy wearing both."

Between the BYU men's and women's track and field teams on Friday, 11 regional qualifying marks were set.

Coaches Craig Poole (women's) and Mark Robison (men's) were pleased with how the team handled a few difficult conditions. The wind kept shifting yesterday, making it hard for throwers. Also, it became difficult to figure out where to start and end races on the track.

Plus BYU traditionally holds this meet at the end of final exams and graduation -- meaning energy is hard to come by.

Some of the highlights included:

• BYU sophomore Leif Arrhenius, the current NCAA leader in the discus, won the event by nearly 20 feet with a regional qualifying throw of 193 feet, four inches. BYU junior Dustin Lawrenson placed second in the event with a regional qualifying toss of 173-06.

• Sophomore Stacy Slight won the 800 run in a qualifying time of 2:07.86.

• BYU freshman Kyle Baker won the javelin with a toss of 198-08, with Matthew Johnston (194-04) and Sean Richardson (189-04) finishing second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, Sarah Lancaster won the women's side with a regional mark of 153-02.

Houle praised Salifu for being the type of teammate who hung around to cheer on her fellow Wolverines. She also knows some Cougars.

Including the guy who gave her the aforementioned advice. It was Leonard Myles-Mills, a former BYU track star, who knows what he's talking about. Also from Ghana, he's been in the Olympics before (2004).

"He just wanted me to save the leaning for the finals, because I might really need it then," Salifu said.
