Holmes, Perez get All-America honors PDF Print E-mail

BYU seniors Russell Holmes and Ivan Perez earned their third AVCA All-America honor when the teams were announced Monday.

Holmes, a middle blocker from Fountain Valley, Calif., was named to the first team after earning second-team honors in 2006 and '07. He was among the nation's best in both attack percentage and blocking average and was named to the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation First Team at the end of regular-season play.

Perez, an outside hitter from Mayguez, Puerto Rico, was named to the AVCA second team. He was first team in 2007 and second team in 2005. He was among national statistical leaders in points per game, kills and digs. Perez was named to the All-MPSF First Team along with Holmes and was also named to the 2008 MPSF All-Tournament Team.

• UVSC baseball: The Utah Valley baseball team hosts Northwest Nazarene (28-20) in a doubleheader today beginning at noon at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem.

The Wolverines (11-27-1) are 4-2 in their past six games and have a team batting average of .419 during that stretch.

Cole Anderson is hitting .550 (11-for-20) in the past six games while Adam Openshaw is 13-for-25 (.520) in that same timeframe.

Andy Jangard (1-3, 7.77 ERA) and Marcus Moore (6-5, 3.14 ERA) are the scheduled starters for Utah Valley.

• BYU baseball: At Greeley, Colo., freshman right-hander Justin Shutt pitched six innings of shutout ball, walked none and scattered four hits Monday in BYU's 10-5 victory over Northern Colorado.

Shutt picked up his first college victory as he successfully freshman lefty Daniel Welch in the fourth when the Cougars (17-26) were down 5-1.

"This was by far the best game Justin has thrown in relief," said BYU coach Vance Law. "He changed speeds, hit the strike zone and took a step in the right direction in the transition from high school. Our hitters battled well and put up runs when we needed them."

Sean McNaughton hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning and J.C. Leach had a double and two RBI. Kent Walton hit a solo homer in the seventh inning and Kasey Ko was 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored. Steve Parker had two hits and an RBI and Jonathan Cluff was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

BYU faces the Bears (15-29) this afternoon with lefty Eric Judd scheduled to get the start.

• UVSC softball: At Orem, Utah Valley's bats came alive in a 10-2, six-inning win over Northern Colorado in the first game of a Monday doubleheader at MSTAR Field. The Wolverines (12-30) pounded out 14 hits and won their fourth straight game in the opener before the Bears (14-35) limited UVSC to two hits to end the streak and win the nightcap 7-2.

Leadoff hitter Meghan Woodworth led UVSC as she went 4-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two runs in Game 1. Slugger Heidi Stocks hit her ninth home run of the season and finished 2-for-4 with three RBI. Cherylyn McGraw, Jessica Anderson, and Kylee Steadman all had two hits in the first game, as well, to help propel the Wolverines to the victory.

Alli Bramwell (10-13) pitched six innings scattering five hits and only allowing one earned run while striking out six.

With out in the second, Utah Valley had seven straight hitters reach base capped by Stocks' two-run blast. Woodworth had a two-run double in the inning while McGraw also had an RBI in the decisive inning.

In the second game, Bears starter Kelli Henderson allowed just two hits.

The Wolverines host UNC in another doubleheader Wednesday beginning at noon.
