If Friday night is any indication, BYU may want to postpone the completion of its new South Field until further notice.
The reason: The Cougar men's soccer team may have just found itself a new home at Haws Field.
BYU christened its temporary field in a big way Friday night, getting two goals from midfielder Britton Osborne to cruise to the 5-1 victory in its regular-season opener.
"To get five goals in the home opener feels pretty good," said BYU coach Chris Watkins. "We'd like to try our luck on South Field, but we play on this every day so there was no problem getting adjusted."
Although their regular pitch isn't scheduled to be finished until July 8 when the Cougars host Real Salt Lake, the men in blue wasted no time in settling in to its new surroundings.
Just seven minutes into the contest, BYU found the net when Osborne nailed a cross into the box that was eventually shuffled into the net by the Surge on an own goal.
"It was on our drawing board," said Watkins of the quick start. "We knew they might be questioning themselves and if we could get an early goal on them it would make for an easier day and that was the case."
The quick goal was only the beginning of Cascade's defensive woes, as the Cougars outshot the Surge 7-2 in the first 20 minutes.
Not only that, but after three consecutive misses by the Surge, midfielders Brent Jensen and Jordan Cushman nearly added a couple more goals for the Cougars. However, Jensen's wide-open shot bounced off the top bar and Cushman's attempt to put it back sailed just over the top of net.
The third time proved to be the charm for BYU minutes later, as Osborne dazzled the Surge defense in the 37th minute to score his first goal and give his team the 2-0 halftime lead.
The Cougars continued to pour it on the Surge in the second half, quickly turning a competitive match into a scoring clinic.
Despite allowing midfielder Marco Juarez to catch their defense off balance and score the Surge's lone goal of the night, the Cougars manhandled the Surge in the final 45 minutes.
Perhaps the most impressive goal on the night came from Osborne on pass from Zack DeFrancis. After sprinting 55 yards at full speed, Osborne teed off on the ball with his left foot, blasting it past the keeper for his second goal.
"Brit was spectacular," Watkins said. "To hit the ball with his left foot at that kind of pace was something special. That was a world-class goal and the fans got their money's worth."
Osborne wasn't the only Cougar torching the net against Cascade. After assisting on the previous goal, DeFrancis buried one of his own and moments later, Orem native Mike Moreno found another Orem native in Scott Heaton for the Cougar's fifth score.
"Offensively it was a great night for us," Watkins said. "We still need to work on some things defensively, but hopefully we put on a good show for the fans."
The Cougars will get yet another chance to please their fans, as they play host to the Spokane Spiders tonight at 7:30 p.m. |
