Bronco Mendenhall said after practice today redshirts have to be earned, meaning they won't automatically be placed on freshman not in the two deep. An interesting concept I will explain in my story in the Herald.
Quarterbacks were efficient in today's AM practice, completing 17 of 23 passes combined.
A couple of plays stood out, one being a nice deep sideline throw from Max Hall to O'Neill Chambers. Later, Max was particularly frustrated on a failed third down play where the whistle was blown before he could throw the ball. He threw it after and inadvertently popped freshman linebacker Michael Alisa in the pads. Like any player would have, Alisa started to move toward Hall ... until one of the coaches said, "Not that guy. Not that guy."
Good advice for a freshman linebacker: Don't mess with the starting quarterback.
Benard Afutiti finally got his JC papers in order and showed up to practice today. He's pretty far behind, though; Bronco said the entire defense has already been put in.
I'll add another report from the afternoon practice, the first day of two-a-days.
UPDATE: Sorry it took me so long to update with the PM practice; I got caught up watching the Olympic opening ceremony. What a spectacle, huh?
Not much to report from the late practice. It only lasted just longer than an hour and the younger players took the most reps. Steven Thomas made a nice play to pick Brenden Gaskins during team drills and Kurt McEuen threw a touchdown pass to Landon Jaussi to end practice.
Saturday is the team's first scrimmage, held at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
