During the regular season, BYU lets its scout teams go up against each other in a scrimmage situation known as "Thursday Night Football." What it lacks in crispness and execution it usually makes up for in enthusiasm and effort.
That's pretty much what we saw Wednesday morning at LaVell Edwards Stadium in the final scrimmage of fall camp. Almost all of the starters were held out and the coaches took a long look at 2,'s, 3's and 4's.
The only touchdown drive came from fourth-string quarterback Stephen Covey, who ran the option offense. He completed a 57-yard pass to J.J. DiLuigi to the 5-yard line and scooted in from three yards out two plays later. Another touchdown of sorts was scored when Rex Morgan, a freshman wide receiver from Greeley, Colo., blocked a punt against the second string. Matt Marshall ran the ball into the end zone. In fact, BYU tried to punt five times and it was blocked four times, twice by Landon Jaussi. Good thing that's all second unit players.
Backup Brenden Gaskins was 12 of 15 for 99 yards and two interceptions and third-stringer Kurt McEuen was 6 of 12 for 56 yards and one pick. Interceptions made by nose tackle Tevita Hola, linebacker Jeff Bell and safety Travis Uale.
Bronco Mendenhall said he was disappointed in the execution of the 2's, 3's and 4's but did say he thinks this team overall is further along than any of the teams he's coached at BYU.
Players get Thursday off as coaches spend all day game planning for Northern Iowa.
