So this is what we learned from Wednesday's BYU football scrimmage: The second and third teams aren't good enough to win the Mountain West Conference.
Wow. What a revelation.
Bronco Mendenhall said he was disappointed with his reserves performance, and who could blame him? Four blocked punts, three interceptions and a whole bunch of blown assignments. He also said he was worried about the team's depth.
The thing to remember here, of course, is that none of the first-unit guys were playing. If you play one or two of your second or even third unit guys with the starters, it makes a HUGE difference. That's what BYU has been doing during fall camp. You might see the second unit d-line with the starting linebackers and defensive backs, or a couple of backup linebackers with the first unit. On offense, you'll see Fui Vakapuna, J.J. DiLuigi, Wayne Latu and Kaneakua Friel rotate into the backfield with Harvey Unga. You'll see several different receivers in with the first unit and guys like R.J. Willing, Garrett Reden or Jesse Taufi rotating in on the offensive line.
So remember that the guys that who still have to learn the BYU way don't have to carry the load until 2009 or 2010 - unless there's a rash of injuries, and then all bets are off.
