Depending on where you live or what program you play for, there is a good chance that if you are a high school baseball player, you could begin and end your high school career without you ever being seen by a college baseball coach.
But what if that could change?
BYU has teamed up with Salt Lake Community College to offer an Elite Fall Instruction Camp that will allow some of the top high school baseball talent to participate in front of coaches at both BYU and Salt Lake Community College.
"I'm excited about it, I know Salt Lake's excited about it, and those who have found out about it are excited about it," said BYU assistant coach Ryan Roberts. "I think the most important thing is that kids have 11 opportunities to play on a nice field and under the lights, and to have 11 opportunities to get better this fall. We want to use it as an opportunity to see local kids and watch them compete."
Last year Brock Whitney made a name for himself at BYU's camp. The Cougars had not planned on signing Whitney, but he impressed BYU so much that the Cougars signed him and made him part of the program.
"We can only go out and evaluate a kid four times (NCAA rule), this gives a player 11 opportunities to be in front of college coaches," Roberts said. "When a kid comes into camp for us, it doesn't count as an evaluation. It gives us more opportunity fall in love with a kid. On the field we can talk to kids, they learn our philosophy how we get after it. Overall, its just been a great thing and the parental feedback last year the instruction on the field was really good."
What makes this camp unique from many others is that it combines individual instruction and competition through game format. Each player will be placed on a team of 13. Players must sign up in a primary position to organize a team (two catchers, one first base, three infielders, three outfielders, and four pitchers).
Each player will be placed on a team that will meet for instructional sessions according to the schedule. Camp times each day will be between 5:30 and 9 p.m. and will be played at either BYU's Miller Park or Salt Lake Community College's Cate Field.
The league is open to current high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Cost for the camp is $350 and space is limited. The league will run from September through October on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will be held at both locations.
The camp will conclude at BYU's Miller Park on Oct. 8 with a final camp championship day.
