Each week the Daily Herald will feature updates on the high school and junior college players the BYU football program is recruiting. Some players have already made oral commitments to BYU and others have been offered scholarships.
• Making a big play: Manti Te'o (6-foot-2, 225 pounds), one of the nation's best linebackers and a top BYU recruit, picked off a pass and returned it 46 yards for a third-quarter touchdown as No. 1 Punahou pulled away for a 41-14 win over the Knights on a soggy, humid night, as reported in the Honolulu Star-Tribune.
The BuffanBlu were ahead just 13-7 moments into the second half when Te'o read a short pass by Castle's Blake Rapozo and raced up the right sideline, shaking off Rapozo along the way.
Punahou is 2-0 and will play on the mainland Saturday against Central Kitsap (Wash.).
• Doing it all: Another recruit BYU has its eye on is Kyle Van Noy (6-4, 202, WR/LB) from McQueen High School in Reno, Nev. McQueen routed Sprauge (Ore.) 40-13 on Saturday and Van Noy made his presence felt on both sides of the ball. He had two TDs -- a 39-yard reception and a 60-yard strip-and-run on defense -- and also registered two sacks and a fumble recovery.
"We're trying to start off the season right this year," Van Noy told the Reno Gazette Journal. "We just wanted to play Lancer football, get back to the old fashioned Lancer football, how we used to come out on top all the time in the first quarter and just take it over in the second half."
McQueen (1-0) plays Carson on Friday.
• Time to get started: BYU's top prospect for the Class of 2010, Skyline (Wash.) quarterback Jake Heaps (6-2, 195), makes his 2008 debut on Friday against Sheldon (Ore.). Heaps has already received scholarship offers from BYU, Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Boise State, Arizona State, Minnesota, Stanford, California, South Carolina, UCLA and Notre Dame. Reports are that Heaps will be at the BYU-Washington football game on Saturday in Seattle.
• Not enough: Two BYU commits had good individual games last week but couldn't push their teams to victory. Snow Canyon's Adam Timo (6-1, 185, RB) had 157 yards rushing and two touchdowns but his team fell to Orem 30-20. Mountain View's Anthony Heimuli (5-11, 225, RB) has rushed for 334 in the first two games of the season but the Bruins are 0-2 after a tough 40-37 overtime loss to West Jordan. Heimuli had 150 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown in that game.
Spanish Fork's Richard Wilson (6-4, 215, TE), who has received a scholarship offer from BYU, caught touchdown passes of 46 and 14 yards, but the Dons lost to Timpview 57-12 after the T'Birds scored 35 points in the second quarter.
• Add T-Birds: Timpview's big second quarter overshadowed yet another outstanding defensive performance. BYU commits Craig Bills (6-2, 202, S) and Bronson Kaufusi (6-6, 220, DE) and recruits Chris Badger (6-0, 183, S) and Xavier Su'a-Filo (6-5, 285) all contributed to keeping Spanish Fork off-balance all game long.
Timpview, which has won 25 straight games, got a big game from BYU prospect Travis Van Leeuwen (6-3 ,190, WR), who caught six passes for 200 yards and three touchdown in the first half alone.
• Extra points: Bingham, with BYU commit Remington Peck (6-5, 220, LB/TE) and recruit L.T. Filiaga (6-1, 230, LB), fell to 0-2 with a 27-19 loss to Alta. ... BYU commit Peni Maka'afi (5-11, 215, RB) had an 8-yard scoring run but Northridge dropped a 30-13 decision to Crespi (Calif.) last Satuday. ... BYU commit Mitch Matthews (6-5, 195, WR) and his Southridge (Ore.) teammates routed West Linn 41-21 to open the 2008 season. ... Ponderosa (Colo.) and BYU commit Terry Alletto (6-3, 260, C) opened the year with a 28-21 win over Rampart, and Bryan (Texas) and BYU commit Fono Vakalahi (6-4, 320, OL) pulled off the same feat with a 28-20 victory over Cypress Falls. |
