The BYU cross country team hosted its annual Autumn Classic on Saturday morning, and the Cougars could not have hoped for a better showing from both their men's and women's teams.
Stephan Shay and Anna Sperry led their respective teams to victory, as BYU started the cross country season off on a positive note. Shay won the overall men's individual event, while Sperry finished third overall in the women's individual event.
The BYU men scored 15 points, with Utah State coming in second with 59. The Cougar women scored 35 points to beat second-place Nebraska, who had 51.
BYU's Brandon Hebbert, who finished third overall in the men's race with a time of 21:03.4, led the way for most of the race until Shay made his move to overtake Hebbert with just over 300 yards to go.
"Once we got to the track, I knew I could finish strong," said Shay, who finished in the four-mile race in a time of 21:00.2. "But I got to give my teammate credit for leading pretty much the entire race."
University of Nebraska runner Lara Crofford won the women's 5K individual title with a time of 19:10.9. Unlike many out-of-state runners, Crofford seemed to run stronger as the race wore on.
"With about a half-mile to go, I started to feel it a bit," she said. "I think it helped me out just starting out really slow so I could finish strong."
The BYU men took eight of the top 10 spots, including Richard Nelson (21:06.2) in fourth, Kyle Perry (21:10.09) in fifth and Tommy Gruenwald (21:20.3) in sixth. On the women's side, the Cougars had three others besides Sperry finish in the top 10: Angela Wagner (19:44.7) in fourth, Katie Andrews (19:55.4) in sixth and Stacy Slight (20:02.1) in eighth.
The UVU men finished in fourth with 105 points, while the Wolverine women placed sixth with 158 points. Jared Keller paced the UVU men with a 12th-place finish while Aleina Eisenhauer wook 31st to lead the Wolverine women.
High schoolers from around the state also participated in the events on Saturday.
Karl Wilcock from Hurricane took first place in the boys event, and Shalaya Kipp of Skyline crossed the finish line first in the girls event.
Timpview won the team boys event, while Mountain Crest took the title in the girls event.
Next week, the BYU men will travel to San Diego to participate in the Aztec Invitational. The BYU women's team will wait until Sept. 20 when it travels to Eagle, Idaho, to take part in the Bob Firman Invitational.
