¬ After eruptingoffensively to beat Utah by five on Saturday, the BYU Cougars needed only one goal to beat the UNLV Rebels on Thursday at home.
The Cougars haven't lost at South Stadium this season and are now 8-0 when they score first.
For a long stretch it didn't seem like BYU was ever going to score. The Cougars had 13 shots in the opening half and eight of those had to be turned away by UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo.
The Cougars finally put one past Lugo six minutes into the second half. Anderson took a corner kick and sent it to Andrea Willis who headed it toward the goal. Willis' header was tipped by Whitney Feller into the goal.
"Andrea headed it and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," Feller said of her second goal this season. "My job is just to stand in front and shield the goalie."
Although Feller attributed her goal to a bit of luck, she realized the Cougars could have done more offensively.
"We have 27 shots and only one goal, obviously we need to do better at shooting," Feller said.
Katie Larkin, Katie Hodgkiss, Lauren Anderson and Kassidy Christensen all had good scoring chances that didn't find the back of the net.
"They played hard," BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said of the Rebel defense. "They've had success and they are good, but we had our chances."
In spite of the lack of scoring in the first half, the Cougars continued to take their chances. BYU racked up 27 shots to match their season high.
The lack of scoring could also easily be attributed to Lugo in the Rebel net.
"She is a very good goalkeeper," Rockwood said. "She is athletic and very quick to the ball."
The BYU defense remained strong throughout the game, especially when UNLV was pressing late in the game, and posted their third shutout in a row.
"It is just solid team defense," Rockwood said. "We have four experienced defenders back there. We keep teams from getting into any offensive rhythm."
BYU is now 2-0 in Mountain West Conference play.
Next, the 9-5 Cougars take on the 4-6-2 San Diego State Aztecs. The game is Saturday at South Stadium at 8 p.m. |
