The BYU women's volleyball team looked to regroup after a disappointing road trip by opening a three-match homestand with a win at the Smith Fieldhouse on Thursday.

The Aztecs took advantage of early BYU errors to beat the Cougars in four games, 25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 27-25.

SDSU (5-10, 2-3 MWC) started hot, jumping out to a 7-1 lead that eventually ballooned to a 17-6 lead in the first game. But the Cougars (9-6, 2-4) slowly clawed their way back to pull within four points. The comeback fell short however, as the Aztecs took the first game, 25-20.

In the second game, it was the Cougars who jumped out to an early lead behind the strong play of Kayla Walker and Bryn Porter, who each had five kills in the game. But it was not enough as SDSU fought its way back to squeak by the Cougars, 27-25.

But BYU would not go down without a fight as the Cougars came roaring back. Ashton Hosford led a balanced BYU offense with four kills in the third game as BYU won, 25-19.

The Cougars again jumped out to an early lead in the fourth game, but the Aztecs played their way back into the game to eke out a 27-25 victory.

BYU coach Shay Goulding, who is in her first year as head coach of the Cougars, said there are many things to be improved on.

"We made critical mistakes at critical times," she said. "In my mind, we just need to gain some mental toughness and some real confidence."

Goulding also said her team needs to do better playing as a unit.

"We're a pretty talented team," she added "But we've yet to dial it in and play as a group."

Sophomore libero Melissa Lake, who finished with a game high 18 digs, said the Cougars need to be more disciplined.

"We just need to play our game," she said. "We can't let up on those runs."

Porter finished with a team high of 17 kills, while Walker recorded with 13 kills and 14 digs for her third double-double of the year.

Rachel Dyer had a season high 12 kills, while Hosford had 11 kills, also a season high. It was the third time BYU had four players with double digit kills.

Setter Kiana Rogers also recorded a season high 58 assists, which was three more assists than the Aztecs had as a team.

Goulding says that although the loss was tough, it can turn out to be a positive thing.

"This could be the end of us, or it could be the best thing to happen to us," she said. "I'm choosing to believe that it was the best thing that could happen to us."

The Cougars will try to rebound Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse against UNLV at 7 p.m. Fans can use their football ticket stubs to get into the game at a discounted price.
