Forwards Kassidy Christensen and Lauren Anderson scored in the first half to help BYU to a 2-0 win over San Diego State in chilly conditions on Saturday afternoon.

Christensen started the scoring at the 13:24 mark after Kelsea Kakadelas tapped an Anderson corner kick to her in the middle of the box.

Anderson scored the second goal from about 20 yards out when she blasted the through a crowd of players in the box past the diving SDSU keeper.

BYU's defense limited the Aztecs to two shots in the first half. while BYU had 10 shots and led 2-0 at the break.

San Diego state applied pressure in the second half, recording three shots, but the Cougar defense did not allow a goal.

Freshman keeper McKinzie Olson had three saves.

BYU improved to 10-5-0 overall, 3-0-0 in MWC play. The Aztecs drop to 4-8-2, 0-3 MWC. BYU has not allowed a goal in MWC play. BYU is undefeated (6-0) at South Field in 2008.

"We're happy to be 3-0 in conference," said Rockwood. "But we've got to come out and work hard like we have been all season and get ready for next week.

BYU is on the road for their next two games, facing off against TCU in Fort Worth on Thursday at noon and then taking on New Mexico in Albuquerque, also at noon. • BYU women's volleyball: At Provo, the homecourt was not kind to the BYU women's volleyball team as the Cougars fell in three games to the UNLV Rebels, 25-15, 25-11, 28-26, in the Smith Fieldhouse.

BYU is now 9-7 overall, 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference, and has lost four straight.

"It's really hard to watch all these losses pile up, but I truly believe that when we turn it around, we're going to be unstoppable," said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. "This is where we find out what we're made of and what kind of character we have."

Sophomore Christina Measom led the way for BYU with nine kills on a .381 hitting percentage. Junior Ashton Hansen Hosford posted six blocks to pace the Cougars, but a .091 hitting percentage compared to a .341 mark for the Rebels made the difference. UNLV's Jessica Walters tallied a match-high 14 kills.

Despite the outstanding early play Measom, who had three kills in the first seven BYU points, the Cougars still found themselves trailing 14-7 early in Game 1. An 11-3 run by the Rebels established the tone for the opening frame as UNLV's offense seemed to score at will. With a final hitting percentage of .565, the Rebels cruised to the 25-15 victory.

BYU started strong in Game 2, but a six-point UNLV run put the Rebels in front at 10-5. The Cougars fought back with five straight points including two blocks to knot the score at 10-10. But the momentum was short-lived as the Rebels ran off nine points to take a commanding lead. Redshirt freshman Casey Speredon finally got a side-out for BYU with a kill down the line after entering the match, but the Cougars could not overcome the deficit. UNLV scored 15 of the last 16 points in the set to take the 25-11 win. BYU struggled offensively in the set, hitting -.077.

Game 3 was a battle from the start, until a 4-0 BYU spurt gave the Cougars an 8-6 lead. Despite continued pressure from the Rebels, BYU managed to hold on to the lead to a 15-13 advantage until four straight UNLV scores put the Rebels ahead. Facing match point at 24-22, BYU came back with a Rebel error and a block from Hosford and Kiana Rogers to knot the score at 24-24. UNLV had another chance at 25-24, but two points later it was the Cougars who had the set opportunity at 26-25. A Rebel kill extended the period long enough the UNLV to string together three points and take the set, 28-26, on a Cougar hitting error.¬ 

Up next for BYU is a showdown with in-state rival Utah in the annual Deseret First Duel rivalry series. The match will begin Friday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse and be shown live worldwide on BYUTV.

• UVU cross country: At Cedar City, Utah Valley University's men's and women's cross country teams finished second (34 points) and third (44 points), respectively, at the Color Country Invitational at Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Cedar City.

UVU's men, who ran an 8K course, were led once again by freshman Joshua McCabe. McCabe finished third overall with a time of 25:31.5. The Wolverines men had three other top-10 finishers, sophomore Jared Keller finished fifth (26:04.0), junior Derick Moody seventh (26:22.6), and senior Danny Moody eighth (26:24.5).

The women, who ran a 5K course, were led for the first time this season by freshman Stephanie Christensen, who finished third overall with a time of 19:12.0. Other top-10 finishers for Utah Valley's women included freshman Krystal Harper, who placed sixth (19:28.5), and freshman Angela Baker, who was 10th (19:38.7).

Southern Utah won the men's race with 25 points. Idaho State was third (71) and Dixie State fourth (118).

For the women, Idaho State won with 37, followed by Southern Utah at 42. Dixie State was fourth (120).
