Kyle Whittingham, a former Cougar from Provo, is getting paid to help Utah create outstanding defensive teams.
Will he ever return to BYU and Provo? Whittingham just turned down an offer to be the defensive coordinator for San Diego State. He is now looking over a contract extension from Utah athletic director Chris Hill to ensure his stay at Utah beyond next year. It is a good offer and one that will be financially beneficial to Whittingham.
But if Gary Crowton comes calling, would he move to Provo? The answer is yes, according to those close to him.
The big question is if BYU will make any room for another coach on staff. With the retirement of defensive line coach Tom Ramage, it appears that slot will be taken by Utah DE coach Steve Kaufusi. There is no evidence at this time there will be any other additions to the staff. If that's the case, Whittingham will sign the contract on be on with his career in Salt Lake City.
Crowton is totally focused on the Liberty Bowl right now. Any decisions or announcements concerning Kaufusi or other changes would not come until January 2002. Same goes for rumors about New Mexico DC Bronco Mendenhall who has previous connections with Crowton at Snow College. We just don't see any movement right now before the bowl game towards any deals with these two coaches. |
