Gary Crowton isn't in a hurry to name a replacement for Ken Schmidt as defensive coordinator.
But the new guy, according to Crowton, will need to be energetic, visionary, possess great leadership skills and be able to make BYU a consistent No. 1 defense in the MWC while consistently showing in the top defenses in the country. That person will also, with Crowton's approval, choose his own support people to help him on defense.
Crowton said he met with Schmidt this morning and reviewed the year and during the conversation Schmidt and Crowton mutually agreed that a retirement was in Schmidt's best interest. Crowton did say if Schmidt hadn't decided to retire, he would have been back next year as a coach.
Now comes speculation. Nobody knows what happened in that room. But it could be that Crowton demoted Schmidt's role and it became evident that retirement would be best. There is no evidience from what Crowton said, or was willing to reveal, that he simply asked Schmidt to resign his post and leave the staff.
A Patrick Ridgell story and Harmon column will follow within hours. |
