Think BYU is scoring a lot of points?
Sure, BYU has put up 97 points in its past two games, but a future Cougar and his team almost reached that total on one Friday.
BYU commit J.J. DiLuigi (5-9 188 RB) ran for 137 yards and four touchdowns in the first 20 minutes, then watched as his Canyon (Calif.) teammates completed a 90-0 thrashing of Golden Valley last Friday.
“I was hoping for more yards and more touchdowns, but it’s hard when we’re returning interceptions and getting the ball on the 2-yard line,” DiLuigi told the Santa Clarita Signal. “We’re just happy to get the win.”
The 90 points broke the Santa Clarita Valley record for most points in game. Golden Valley is in its third year of competition.
Welcome back: After missing a game with a leg injury, San Jacinto (Calif.) running back Ryan Kessman returned to the lineup in grand fashion. The senior BYU commit piled up 204 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns, including a 59-yarder that put the Tigers’ first points on the board, in a 33-10 win over Citrus Hill.
“I feel I’m back to 100 percent, it felt good,” Kessman told the Press Enterprise. “I have to give it up to my offensive line and my fullback, it’s not that easy.”
San Jacinto is 6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
The undefeated: Several BYU commits are still playing for undefeated teams. Lineman commit Manaaki Vaitai (6-3 296) and his Trinity (Texas) teammates are 7-0, 4-0 after a 28-7 victory over McArthur. Linebacker commit Tyler Beck (6-1 205) rushed for a touchdown to help Vista Murrieta (Calif.) run its record to 7-0, 2-0 with a 33-30 win over Temescal Canyon. Bingham standouts Jordan Pendleton (6-2 195 DB) and Star Lotulelei (6-4 245 DE) are key players on a 10-0 Bingham team, which rolled over West Jordan 48-6 last week. Bingham is the top-ranked 5A team in Utah and begins the state playoffs on Friday against Timpanogos.
Two BYU prospects — Devin Cunningham (6-6 310 OL) and Christian Tupou (6-2 260 DL) — play for a 7-0 Grant (Calif.) team that has outscored it past three opponents 175-0.
Running back prospect Roy Helu (6-0 205) of San Ramon Valley rushed for 117 yards, caught five passes for 133 more and scored twice in his team’s 31-28 win over Amador Valley. San Ramon Valley is 7-0, 3-0.
Big game: Don Lugo (Calif.) receiver prospect Russell Carr (6-3 192) had four catches for 151 yards and two touchdown in a 49-0 shutout of Garey. One of Carr’s catches went 79 yards for a score. He also had seven tackles as Don Lugo moved to 3-4, 1-1.
Efficient work: Elk Grove (Calif.) senior Brannon Brooks, who’s made an oral commitment to BYU as a defensive back, is making a pretty impressive showing on the offensive side of the ball. In last Friday’s 49-26 victory over Davis, Brooks rushed 10 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. He also had an interception and two tackles on defense. Elk Grove is 6-1, 1-1.
Finding the end zone: BYU quarterback commit Jason Munns (6-5 225) was 10 of 20 for 91 yards in Southridge (Wash.) 33-14 loss to Coeur d’Alene. Munns did rush for one touchdown and threw for another. On his touchdown pass, Munns escaped four defenders before throwing a 14-yard pass to Brennan Wright. According to Total Blue Sports, Munns attended last Saturday’s BYU-UNLV game.
Playoff fever: Utah heads into the state football playoffs this weekend. Scotty Ebert (5-11 180 WR) caught a 3-yard touchdown pass in Jordan’s 47-7 win over Hillcrest last week. Jordan hosts Northridge in the first round of the 5A playoffs. Timpview linemen Eathyn Manumaleuna (6-2, 275) and Houston Reynolds (6-3 295) will lead the T’Birds into the playoffs with a home game against West. Last week, Timpview beat Orem 21-3 to win the Region 7 title. Timpview has not allowed a touchdown in 23 quarters.
Braden Brown (6-6 235 TE) caught a 1-yard touchdown pass but it was the only score of the game as 4A’s No. 1 team, Highland, was shocked by West 33-6 last week. Highland will host Roy in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. Jordan Smith (6-4 200 WR) and Spanish Fork dropped a 7-6 decision to Pleasant Grove last week and will travel to Hunter in the first round of the 5A playoffs.
How do you do: Two BYU recruiting prospects and their respective teams squared off last Friday. Devin Mahina (6-6 225 TE) and Upland (Calif.) knocked off G Pittman (5-9 175 DB) and Rancho Cucamunga, 31-24. Mahina had two receptions for 48 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown. He also had eight tackles (six solo).
Extra Points: Defensive back commit Steven Thomas (5-11 180) returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown in a 21-10 Chino Hills (Calif.) win over Glendora. Thomas also added three receptions for 25 yards and seven tackles, six solo. ... Commit Marcus Matthews (6-5 200 WR) and his Southridge (Ore.) teammates dropped a 31-20 decision to Westview to fall to 4-3, 2-1. ... Offensive line commit Levi Mack (6-5 315) and his Eastern Arizona teammates scored a big upset last Saturday with a 25-20 win over previously No. 1-ranked Snow College. ... Prospect Willie Griffin (5-9 190 RB) rushed for 134 yards as McClymonds (Calif.) defeated Fremont 59-22 last Friday.
