DAILY HERALD
Following are matchups for today's BYU-AF game:
BYU offense vs. Air Force defense
BYU has scored 103 points in its past two games against Air Force and has been on a tear through the MWC. Air Force simply doesn’t have the manpower to stop the Cougar offense. The best the Falcons can hope for is to force some turnovers. Air Force is ranked 109th in the country in pass efficiency defense. Advantage: BYU
BYU defense vs. Air Force offense
BYU has played the Air Force option well over the years, with a couple of exceptions during the Gary Crowton era. Linebacker play is key, and that’s exactly where the defense’s strength lies. Air Force is third in the country in rush offense (279.67 per game) and has a bunch of very quick runners, including quarterback Shaun Carney. Advantage: BYU
Special Teams
When did Nathan Meikle turn into a threat as a punt returner? In 2006, Meikle is averaging more than 13 yards per return. The BYU coverage teams have made great strides this year as well. Advantage: Even
Intangibles
BYU has dominated Air Force the past two seasons. The Falcons probably looked past San Diego State last week but will be focused for the Cougars. Still, a loss to a previously winless team might put the seed of doubt into the Falcons, especially if BYU gets off to one of its fast starts. Neither team turns the ball over much, so watch for turnovers to dictate momentum. Advantage: BYU
The Final Word
Not enough horses for Air Force to stay with BYU through four quarters. BYU’s offensive line will eventually dominate. Expect big days from Curtis Brown and Fui Vakapuna.
Prediction: BYU 38, Air Force 17 |
