BYU recruits update: Star QB Munns gets taste of other side of the ball |

Jason Munns, defensive end?
BYU’s top quarterback recruit, who made an oral commitment to the Cougars in June, played four downs on defense for the first time in his varsity career in Southridge’s (Wash.) 46-12 victory over Sunnydale on Friday.
Munns even made his first tackle, chasing down a Sunnydale player after a 17-yard run.
“It was a blast,” Munns told the Tri-City Herald. “I’ve been doing the same thing for so long, I love it, but it gets repetitive. It made things fun.”
At quarterback, Munns was 14-of-19 for 218 yards and three touchdowns while running for another score.
The victory put Southridge in a three-way tie-breaking game with Kennewick and West Valley to determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds for the state playoffs.
“We got through tonight like we needed to,” Munns said last Friday. “On Tuesday, our destiny is in our hands. If ever there was a time this year for us to make plays, it’s Tuesday night.”
But Southridge didn’t make the plays it needed to make, losing to both Kennewick (7-6) and West Valley (6-0) in a Kansas-plan playoff. Munns threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to tie the game against Kennewick, but a blocked extra point ended the matchup. Southridge ends its season with a crossover game against Mount Spokane on Friday.
Stats monster: Receiver recruit Ryan Kessman (6-0 190) of San Jacinto High School (Calif.) had put up some big numbers this season, despite missing most of two games with a hamstring injury.
Kessman had 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns in San Jacinto’s 46-20 victory over Banning last Friday, also adding six catches for 86 yards and 90 more yards on returns. In just four full games this year, Kessman has 701 yards on 59 rushes (11.9) and 12 touchdowns, with 13 catches for 167 more yards. San Jacinto ends the regular season with a road game at 29 Palms on Friday.
Still on the radar: Tight end prospect Devin Mahina (6-6 225) caught four passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns as Upland (Calif.) beat Claremont 40-23 on Friday. Mahina’s stats included an 85-yard touchdown catch.
Running back prospect Roy Helu (6-0 205) rushed for 170 yards, including a 58-yard scoring run, in a 36-12 victory over California. Helu’s San Ramon Valley (Calif.) team is unbeaten at 8-0, 4-0.
BYU is also watching former Timpview quarterback Cade Cooper, who’s completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,473 yards, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions at Snow College.
Wide receiver prospect David Richmond (6-3 200) at Santa Ana Valley Junior College is a four-star recruit who has caught 32 passes for 538 yards and six touchdowns in seven games.
Utah playoff football: Jordan’s Scotty Ebert (5-11 180 WR) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass in his team’s 17-14 victory over Northridge in the first round of the 5A state playoffs last week. Ebert has 31 catches for 444 yards (14.3) and five TDs this season. Jordan travels to Pleasant Grove on Saturday in a quarterfinal matchup.
Jordan Pendleton (6-2 195 DB) and Bingham rolled to a 44-26 victory over Timpanogos in a first-round game to move to 11-0 in 2006. Bingham faces Davis today in the quarterfinals. Last year, Bingham was also unbeaten but lost to current Cougar Mike Hague and Brighton 31-24 in the quarterfinals.
Jordan Smith (6-4 200 WR/DB) and Spanish Fork pulled off a 35-18 upset of Hunter in the 5A first round and travels to Fremont today.
With BYU commits Eathyn Manumaleuna (6-2, 275) and Houston Reynolds (6-3 295) anchoring both lines, Timpview hasn’t allowed a touchdown since the first quarter of the Provo game six weeks ago and have only yielded three points during that span. Timpview blanked West 48-0 in the first round of the class 4A playoffs, moving to 9-1. The T’Birds host Cottonwood and one of the state’s top recruits, lineman Simi Fili, today.
Tight end commit Braden Brown (6-6 235) and Highland rolled past Roy 35-7 in last week’s first round to move to 9-2. The Rams host Orem in the quarterfinals today.
Extra Points: Four-star receiver commit Marcus Matthews (6-5 200) helped Southridge (Ore.) to a 25-6 win over Beaverton last Friday by catching a touchdown pass. Southridge is 5-3 overall, 3-1 in league play. ... Running back commit J.J. DiLuigi and his Canyon (Calif.) teammates complete the regular season at Saugus today. ... Steven Thomas (5-11 180 DB) of Chino Hills (Calif.) is averaging 49.63 yards on eight kickoff returns, including a 93-yarder for a touchdown. Chino Hills is 7-1, 3-0. ... Manaaki Vaitai (6-3 296 DL/OL) and his Trinity (Texas) teammates remain undefeated after a 38-7 victory over Grand Prairie. Trinity is 8-0, 5-0 heading into today’s game with Irving. ... Tyler Beck (6-1 205 LB) and his Vista Murrieta (Calif.) teammates didn’t get to play last Friday; fires in the San Diego area postponed most high school football games. ... Defensive back commit Brannon Brooks (5-10 170) had nine tackles (seven solo) and an interception as Elk Grove (Calif.) doubled up Nevada Union 30-15 to move to 7-1, 2-1. ... Prospect Devan Cunningham (6-6 310 OL) and Grant Union (Calif.) stayed unbeaten at 8-0, 4-0 by destroying McClatchy 78-0 last Friday.
