How does BYU and the MWC compare statistically compared to all 119 Division 1-A schools?

How does the Mountain West Conference (MWC) compare statistically to the other Division 1-A conferences?

How does BYU compare statistically to the conference champions of the other eleven conferences (11 conferences total with 4 independent teams placed together and considered as a group)?

Can you possibly derive anything from comparing all Division1-A schools in one pot?

The following will look at those issues and offer up what I believe to be valuable about looking at these 119 Division 1-A schools as a whole.

One item to note as you look at the conference comparisons. There were four independent teams in 2006 (Army, Navy, Notre Dame and Temple). For the sake of this comparison, they are all grouped together as though they were a conference. Three of the teams did play three other of the independent teams (Notre Dame, Army and Navy) while Navy and Temple played as well. For the sake of the conference champion comparison, Notre Dame was used since they beat both Army and Navy and had the best overall record.

The statistics are broken down into three categories: Offense, Defense, Special Teams/Other. For each individual statistic under each category, I look first at how the separate conferences compare and rank. Then each of the conference champions is compared according to that same statistic under the same category. The detail is provided for those who would like to see how each statistic breaks down, but for overall comparison I summarize the detail below.

Conference Comparison
Offense

Each category is ranked 1 through 12 with 1 being the highest ranking. Altogether there are five offensive statistics that are compared for the category of offense. They are: Total Offense; Rushing; Passing; Pass Efficiency; and Scoring. The individual scores of 1 to 12 are added for each conference and then divided by the number of statistics. Based on this process, here is how the different conferences break down:

Altogether there are five defensive statistics that are compared for the category of defense. They are: Total Defense; Rushing Defense; Passing Defense; Pass Efficiency Defense and Scoring Defense. Now taking the 5 offensive, 5 defensive and 4 special teams/other statistics and adding the numbers all together and dividing them by the 14 total statistics compared, the following overall ranking is produced:

Conclusion
I feel it is a valid comparison of these conferences in this manner. It does not mean although the MWC came out statistically even with the Big Ten conference that you could take any nine of the Big Ten teams vs. nine of the MWC teams and play them and the result would be that the Big Ten would win half the games and the MWC would win the other half. There is a difference in talent, but since each conference tends to play mainly teams on their same level, then it is probably valid to compare them in this fashion.

As is probably expected, the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) conference teams have risen to the top of the statistics and the non-BCS conferences have filled out the bottom of the rankings. Based on this analysis though, the MWC is on an even standing statistically as the Big Ten and is the top of all the non-BCS conferences.

Conference Champion Comparison
Similarly as with the conference comparison, the comparison of the various conference champions compares the twelve teams under the same statistics under the same 14 categories of offense, defense and special teams/other. The only difference was that the number computed for each team is based on where they ended up in the national rankings for each statistic (1 through 119) and not simply just 1 through 12. This makes the comparison better in that it will better indicate how each team specifically performed in a particular statistic compared to the other 118 teams.

Conclusion
While this does not conclude that since BYU is ranked second among all the conference champions that they could therefore beat all the teams below them, it does indicate that they are, to borrow a few Broncoisms, “executing at a higher level” and “invested” to a degree in their particular conference than the other conference champions are in theirs. How that will cross over though to how each team actually stacks up against another cannot be derived minus a legitimate playoff system to let it be decided on the field. For this year we’ll only know an inkling of how this comparison works out with Boise St and Oklahoma playing each other in the Fiesta Bowl. Just based on this analysis and noting that Oklahoma operated in the #1 ranked conference while Boise St operated in the #9 ranked conference, I would say that Boise’s narrow margin of 5 points over Oklahoma in the conference champion comparison would not be enough to carry them to victory over Oklahoma, but luckily we’ll be able to see how that theory plays out.

This statistical comparison does support that Ohio State is legitimately the number one ranked team at the end of the regular season and that BYU, as it has seemed to the casual fan, has been executing at a very high level in all three categories of football and is very well-rounded.

It has been and will continue to be a shame that we are left only to attempt to calculate statistically how each team stacks up against the other 118 teams of Division 1-A football and not be able, as is done in basketball, to see on the field which team is actually the best and how a Boise State or a BYU would compare in playing against the other BCS conference teams.
