BYU beat writers Darnell Dickson and Jason Franchuk break down the biggest issues in Cougar athletics and throughout the world of sports.
This week they talk about Jeff Grimes, BYU men's basketball's seeding and what success this year means for the future.
Here are this week's topics (corresponding to each clip number):
In the news
1. The biggest thing that happened yesterday was in football where BYU offensive line coach Jeff Grimes made public a decision to leave the Cougars and take the same position at the University of Colorado. Why would a coach make this type of move?
2. The BYU mens basketball team received 68 votes from the Associated Press, placing it unofficially in 28th place. Will the Cougars break into the Top 25? If so, when?
3. Former BYU assistant coach and current Eagles head man Andy Reid has been in the news a lot lately because of a pair of incidents involving his sons. The most recent anouncement was that he would take a month-long leave of absence from his job. Is this the right move for him at this point?
The big questions
4. The last bracket projection for the NCAA tournament from ESPN had the BYU men's team with a No. 6 seed and a lock to get an at-large bid. if they fail to win the Mountain West tournament. Have the Cougars done enough to get in and what seed do they deserve?
5. Since the BYU hoops team lost senior guard Rashaun Broadus, who was suspended for the season after a traffic incident in January, they've gone 9-2 overall. Are the Cougars a better team with or without Broadus?
6. The Cougars square off at home against New Mexico on Wednesday and two streak will be on the line: Six straight victories and 28 straight wins at the Marriott Center. How important is continuing these streaks for BYU?
7. Turning to women's basketball, the Cougars lost a tough overtime contest to New Mexico at home last Saturday. This is a squad that has shown some
inconsistency all season, a team that beat Stanford but lost to Hartford. How good are they?
8. Recruiting was the big story last week as 24
football players committed to play for BYU, including some highly-rated recruits. How good do you believe the 2006 class for the Cougars?
9. In men's volleyball, No. 1-ranked BYU faces the No. 2 team in the nation this weekend for the second time this season. They split with then No.-2 UC-Irvine and now heads to play two matches at Pepperdine. How important is beating Pepperdine for the Cougars?
