COUGARBLUE

Recruiting in the MWC is just another opportunity for the various teams to compete

Sports are all about competition and that competition is very often not limited to only what happens on the field or court. In terms of BYU and Utah, there’s hardly a thing related to the rivalry that isn’t considered subject to competition in deciding who the better school is.

Last year this rivalry was even fueled every football home game as a competition between BYU and Utah fans over the purchase of Dryers ice cream. Each home game the fans were shown, in full-color splendor, a graph on the huge replay screen which indicated whether more BYU fans had bought the Dryers BYU Cougar brand ice cream than Utah fans had bought of Dryers Utah Ute brand (As of the New Mexico game, the last game BYU home game of the season, BYU fans were pulverizing Utah fans in the number of units of the BYU variety ice cream purchased—I wonder if that is actually something good to win?). At basketball games the two sets of team cheerleaders engage in a competition of how long the male cheerleaders can hold up the female counterparts in the air on their extended arms. There are food drive competitions, there are competitions on the radio for donations to local shelters, there are competitions for best BYU or Utah jokes, best trash talking, the team mascots even battle it out on the basketball court, etc.—the list goes on and on. If the event’s results can be tabulated, rest assured someone is keeping track of who is doing better—BYU or Utah.

So it’s only normal that recruiting at BYU and Utah would be part of that rivalry.

The Past
For many years BYU has hung up the banner each year of having out-recruited Utah with players that were more highly rated by the leading college recruiting organizations than what Utah had inked to national letters-of-intent. The Utes though, for the last five years (before last year), have been known to only point to the memory of the scoreboard from the last football game played between the two to make their point that sometimes it’s better to lose the battle than to lose the war.

It feels nice to have had BYU win both over this last year.

But the battle goes on
A week ago, BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall, speaking to media representatives and several hundred Cougar Club boosters, who turned out for a news conference at the Cougar Room at LaVell Edwards Stadium said, ‘We didn’t lose to anybody and won’t lose to anybody, I think, from this point on in in-state recruiting.’

Talk about blasting a warning salvo right across the bow of an opposing ship!

His point was that BYU had focused on who they wanted in-state and the result, as stated by Coach Mendenhall in the new conference, “We went after nine in-state players and we got them all.”

Utah coaches, upon hearing of Bronco’s comments, ensured that the competition between the two rivals would continue.

Gary Andersen, Utah defensive coordinator told the Deseret News, “First of all, I would be surprised if Bronco made that statement. If he did, it was ignorant and not factual. Utah and BYU will battle on in-state recruits year-in and year-out. However, we do not always recruit the same players. We feel very good about our in-state recruits and have once again signed quality players from the state of Utah. And we look forward to recruiting against BYU in the future and winning.”

Utah’s head coach, Kyle Whittingham tried to describe further the Ute’s perspective on this recruiting rivalry when he reported to the Salt Lake Tribune that BYU, “had maybe a different list of guys [than] we targeted.”

Back at ya Bronco!

So who won the bitter in-state recruiting rivalry between BYU and Utah seems to be in the eye of the beholder. Utah went five years before 2006 where according to “experts”, who rank such events, they had yearly lost the recruiting war, but had earned the right to turn their nose up at BYU and point out how that issue had been decided on the playing field despite what the recruiting services had said.

It’s the kind of attitude like that bumper sticker that you’ll see occasionally on someone’s car bumper mocking the claim of others that say, “My child is an Honor Roll student.” The challenging one says, “My child beat up your Honor Roll student.”

But now the Cougars have a year in which they won both of those battles and the hope is that they will build upon that.

Mountain West Conference Rivalry
This recruiting rivalry lives on throughout the whole MWC as well as can be expected. Rivalries are an expected desirable byproduct of conference affiliation. The MWC website even offers a forum for the various team’s fans to “one-up” each other on recruits, victories etc.

But the honest truth is that stars assigned by the leading college recruiting organizations often are not the best indicator of success of a recruiting season.

TCU’s head coach, Gary Patterson, stated in the official release from the TCU athletics department, “It’s easy to get caught up in everyone else’s evaluation of a player, but we stick to our guns. I firmly believe that’s why we’ve been successful at TCU. We don’t care if we’re ranked in the top 25 in national recruiting classes. We would much rather be ranked in the top 25 at the end of the football season.”

Which they have the last two seasons.

Patterson proved his point by singling out that former cornerback, Drew Colemann, of the NY Jets, was only a two-star prospect out of junior college for the Horned Frogs.

Part of what Patterson said is “coach speak” as would be expected. It’s not like he’s turning his nose up at the higher rated recruits and wouldn’t be willing to oblige a few that would come his way, but he has successfully survived with a successful program with what he has brought on board.

Sometimes the mix is better than the ingredients added.

I would never argue that it doesn’t help to have a stable full of 4 and 5-star recuits considering Florida, Texas and USC’s success in these last few years, but BYU has a history of successfully putting a lot of players into the NFL that were never such highly rated recruits.

MWC recruits
Let’s take a look at how the various teams in the MWC did this season in football recruiting

First off, Air Force is not a part of this review because Air Force doesn’t release the names of its recruits until they arrive on campus in the summer because of the academy’s appointment process and coaches cannot comment on individual athletes until they recruit has accepted and appointment in writing. There are names listed on various recruiting sites and Scout.com has ranked Air Force’s class No. 104 and Rivals.com has them tied for No.108 all based on who probably will complete the recruitment process.

It’s really hard to compare classes actually as to their benefit to a particular team as each team has different needs and more importantly, run different offenses and defenses. Athletes being recruited are just evaluated mainly on talent and exposure can have some affect on the process as well. The proof of the success of a recruiting class won’t come for a few years down the line, especially with BYU where missions are factored in.

Scout.com and Rivals.com
Basically there are two main Internet based evaluators of high school and junior college talent. They are Scout.com and Rivals.com. Their methods and coverage vary and even the end result evaluations can be quite different.

For Rivals, the minimum rating for a recruit whose name appears in their database is at a score of 5.0 and 2-stars. A 2-star player will range from a grade of 5.0 to 5.4; 3-star player from 5.5 to 5.7; 4-star player from 5.8 to 6.0 and 5-star player has a grade of 6.1.

Scout.com is based on a star grading system. They rank players based solely on an 1 through 5 stars, which makes no differentiation between a bottom-rung 3-star and a top-rung 3-star player. Usually a 1-star rated player is an athlete that has not yet been evaluated by the service, and after evaluation, they are usually put at a 2-star level.

Rank of MWC teams based on rankings
School/Scout.com Avg/Scout overall national ranking/Rivals.com Avg/Rivals overall national tranking/average of the two
1-BYU…2.64…#43…5.46…#56…49.5
2-Utah…2.04…#63…5.36…#70…66.5
3-SDSU…1.81…#81…5.32…#62…71.5
4-TCU…2.09…#73…5.37…#80…76.5
5-UNLV…1.62…#98…5.27…#89…93.5
6-Colorado State…1.71…#83…5.23…#105…94.0
7-New Mexico…1.68…#91…5.16…#101…96.0
8-Wyoming…1.91…#109…5.24…#89…99.0

The order I have the teams listed is an average of the ranking of Scout and Rivals. As you can note, they do differ widely with CSU being the biggest example as Scout.com graded their class at #83 nationally and Rival.com graded it #105 or 22 spots difference.

According to the recruiting services they don’t just base their rankings on the average of points or stars they give each recruits as can be seen above where, for example, Wyoming’s average of players rated by Rivals averaged 5.24 and they were ranked #109 while New Mexico’s averaged 5.16 and yet they were ranked at #91. According to the services, when ranking the teams in an overall national ranking, they look at 1) talent, 2) need and 3) balance. It makes sense. If you added seven 4 or 5-star defensive linemen and yet you had all of you defensive line returning, then you didn’t address your needs or balance.

Cade comes from a family of five brothers and one sister. Cade received several awards in athletics including All-state and All-Region as well as region champions his senior year. Cade was a basketball player as well as football, but his senior year chose to concentrate on football. Out of high school he had offers from Utah, where he committed and Baylor University. But at Utah he fell out of favor before the season began when Coach Ron McBride left and Urban Meyer (now with Florida) took over. He grayshirted his first season at Snow before leaving on a mission. Upon finishing at Snow College, Cade had offers from Utah State, Weber State, Northern Arizona and Troy State and was recruited by Oklahoma, Nebraska and Boston College. He also was apart of the relay team that holds both records in the 4x100 and 4x400 as well. He currently has plans to serve and LDS Church mission. He had a 3.7 GPA. He was recruited by Boston College, California, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State and Utah. Marcus was the first Scout 4-star rated receiver from Oregon.
