Beck signs with Dolphins PDF Print E-mail

Former BYU quarterback John Beck signed a four-year contract with the Miami Dolphins on Monday, while former Timpview defensive tackle Brian Soi signed a free-agent contract with the Dolphins.

Beck, a second-round pick, threw for 79 touchdowns and 11,021 yards at BYU. He was the first quarterback selected by Miami in the first two rounds since Dan Marino in 1983.

According to the Miami Herald, the deal was completed around 8:30 p.m. MDT Sunday, then announced Monday morning.

The Dolphins did not release the terms of the deal and a phone message left with Beck’s agent was not returned. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that, according to a source, the deal includes $2.25 million in guaranteed money.

Beck and other Dolphin rookies are scheduled to begin practice today and team training camp starts Saturday. He will compete with Cleo Lemon to back up Trent Green at quarterback this season. Beck is also viewed as the long-term option at quarterback for the Dolphins, after Green’s tenure.

The Dolphins open their 2007 preseason schedule at home against Jacksonville on Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m., and Miami’s second preseason game, at Kansas City on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m., will be televised on ESPN.

Soi, at 6-foot-3, 315 pounds, was eligible for the July 12 NFL supplemental draft, but was not picked. He signed with BYU in 2003, but academic problems forced him to transfer to Utah State in 2004. In 2005, Soi had 31 tackles for the Aggies, including 4 1/2 sacks, before academic deficiencies ended his college career.

Miami’s first-round pick, Ted Ginn Jr., remained unsigned a day before the first scheduled rookie practice. Ginn, an Ohio State receiver and Miami’s first-round choice, remained unsigned Monday. Ginn’s agent did not return a phone message.

The Dolphins also signed center Drew Mormino, a sixth-round pick, who agreed to a four-year deal.
Miami’s other second-round pick, center Samson Satele, signed a four-year, $2.89 million contract on Thursday.
